The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented numerous significant changes to the format of domestic cricket. The decision on these changes has been taken in a meeting held on 22 August. Now the provision of plate group system has been made in domestic ODI tournaments. These changes will be observed in the new domestic cricket season. It will begin with the Duleep Trophy 2025, which will begin on 28 August. These significant changes are said to have been made in order to place new and good talent in the limelight.
The biggest change in the changes made in domestic cricket will be that now in all the tournaments, teams will play in 4 elite and 1 plate group. There will be a plate group for the bottom 6 teams. Whereas earlier in every season, 2 teams used to move up from the plate group, and 2 teams used to come down from the bottom. Now 1 team will be seen getting promoted or relegated.
The BCCI has introduced several structural changes across domestic tournaments to make the competitions more streamlined and competitive. Under the new system, the six lowest-ranked teams from the previous season in both ODI and T20 formats will now feature in the plate group. In the Senior Women’s Challenger Trophy, similar to the Duleep Trophy, players will be chosen based on teams from six zones. The Senior Women’s T20, which earlier only had knockout matches alongside the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, will now also include a Super League stage. Additionally, in tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Men’s Under-23 State Trophy, and Senior Women’s ODI Trophy, the structure will consist of one plate group and four elite groups, while junior and women’s tournaments will feature one plate group and five elite groups.
The new season of Indian domestic cricket 2025-26 is going to start from 28 August with the Duleep Trophy. The new domestic season will run till the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy on 3 April 2026. The BCCI wants to make domestic cricket better by making changes in it, so that the performance of the teams can improve and more good players can emerge.
