Asia Cup 2025: Selectors Likely to Drop Gill & Jaiswal; Shreyas Iyer, Jitesh Sharma in Contention

Less than three weeks remain before the start of Asia Cup 2025. The Indian team will be announced on August 19 for this major event beginning September 9. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been playing the role of openers very well in T20 Internationals for some time now. There seems to be no reason why either of these two could be dropped. There were speculations that the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, wants to include Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the T20 squad. It was also reported that Gill might be made the vice-captain of the T20 team to eventually become the captain of all formats. However, according to the latest report, neither of them will get a chance in Asia Cup 2025.

In fact, according to a report by Sportstar, the selectors are planning a significant decision to keep Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar intends to retain the same core group, which has recently performed brilliantly in T20 Internationals under coach Gautam Gambhir.

The report also states that the selectors want to include Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma in the Asia Cup team. Jitesh Sharma performed very well for RCB in IPL 2025. He impressed everyone by hitting big shots and contributed to the team winning its first title. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer played a key role in leading the Punjab Kings to the final.
