Women's Commission sought permission from Election Commission to visit Sandeshkhali, team will investigate violence against women
Sandeshkhali: The letter highlights concerns about police arbitrariness and atrocities against women after the elections held in Sandeshkhali and other areas of Bengal.
West Bengal's Sandeshkhali has been in controversy for a long time. Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women has sought permission to visit Sandeshkhali. She has sought permission from the Election Commission to investigate the violence in Sandeshkhali after the Lok Sabha elections. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar in view of the code of conduct.
The letter expresses concerns about police arbitrariness and atrocities against women following the elections in Sandeshkhali and other parts of Bengal. Sharma emphasized in the letter that these reports needed to be addressed immediately. The letter stated that monitoring and investigation of issues concerning violations of women's rights and non-implementation of protective laws is required. She requested an exemption from the code of conduct so that the Commission's team could visit.
Violence broke out between BJP-TMC supporters in West Bengal during the seventh phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections. BJP claims that TMC goons also fired bullets. TMC and BJP workers were seen throwing bricks in three areas of Sandeshkhali.
Basirhat Superintendent of Police Hussain Mehedi Rahman had said that three people were injured during a clash between TMC and BJP supporters in Bayaramari of Sandeshkhali. One person has been arrested. There has been tension in the Barmajur area of Sandeshkhali since last night. Here BJP alleges that on Friday night TMC workers along with policemen went from house to house and threatened BJP polling agents.
