Now, it's not going to cause any problem regarding OTP at least for the time being. We are saying this because the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has postponed the implementation of traceability of commercial messages to December 1, 2024, from November 1. While the extension was aimed at allowing the government to prevent spam and phishing, it has also given time to telecom operators to fix possible glitches in messaging services like one-time passwords.

The telecom operators warned that the deadline of November 1st could cause a delay in sending messages and may impact many crucial services since many businesses are not ready to implement this yet. In light of this risk, the TRAI has extended the deadline to avoid the cancellation of important messages such as OTPs.

As per the new timeline, it would restrict irrelevant messages starting from December 1, and telecom companies will give daily status updates to the telemarketers as well as primary entities (PEs) on which number to stop and make necessary changes before the stipulated time.

TRAI has instructed the telecom companies to implement this new rule of messaging, and they are not completely ready to enforce it. The regulator has made whitelisting mandatory for messages containing registered URLs and callback numbers and ordered shifting all telemarketing calls, which start with "140", onto the distributed laser technology (DLT) platform a few days ago.
