Service Roads Along National Highways to Get Major Upgrade Under New Road Ministry Guidelines
Road Ministry: The Ministry of Road Transport believes this move will prove to be a major improvement in improving the overall quality and durability of road infrastructure in the country.
Service roads being built along National Highways in the country will have the same quality as main roads. The Ministry of Road Transport has instructed its agencies to design service roads as durable and strong as the main highway.
The Ministry explained in its recent circular that, in some cases, repair or construction work along the main highway requires diverting all traffic to service roads. In addition, service roads within urban, semi-urban, and industrial areas are usually very busy since only a few outlets can directly reach the highway.
The Ministry stated that in such circumstances, the condition of service roads deteriorates quickly. The circular stated, "The increased load on service roads leads to premature wear and tear, requiring frequent repairs."

Therefore, it has now been directed that service roads should be designed with their strength and life span in mind.
The Ministry also stated that proper drainage systems are essential for service and slip roads to prevent waterlogging and road damage. All highway agencies have been directed to ensure service roads are constructed and drainage systems are installed in accordance with Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.
This decision will provide relief to travelers from damaged and broken service roads. With the new standards, service roads will not only be safer during traffic diversions but will also perform better over the long term with less maintenance.
The Ministry of Road Transport believes that this step will be a major improvement in improving the overall quality and durability of road infrastructure in the country.
