Sanju Samson’s Poor Form Raises Selection Concerns Ahead of T20 World Cup
Irfan Pathan on Sanju Samson: Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that it was wrong to take Sanju Samson's opening spot away from Shubman Gill and insists that Samson should be given a chance to regain form. If he still fails to perform, Ishan Kishan could be brought in.
Team India is one of the favorites for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, but Sanju Samson’s recent form has raised concerns for the team ahead of the tournament. The stylish wicketkeeper-batsman has struggled with the bat at crucial junctures. He has managed to score 10, 6, 0, and 24 runs in the ongoing T20 series against New Zealand ahead of the tournament. Sanju Samson lost his opening berth to Shubman Gill in the Asia Cup and subsequent series, but the team realized their mistake and recalled Sanju as the opening batsman, though he has not been able to live up to the expectations.
Meanwhile, IshanKishan has made a good impression on his comeback, which makes the race all the more challenging for the others. Tilak Varma is nearing his return from injury. Consequently, the management will have to make a difficult decision between Samson and Kishan for the remaining matches.
Veteran Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan supported Samson, telling RevSportz that the wicketkeeper-batsman deserves a consistent place in the top order. Pathan called his previous demotion to the middle order unfair and insisted that Samson should be given a chance to regain form. He also agreed that if he continues to struggle, the team management's decision to bring in Ishan will be understandable.

He further emphasized the importance of players like Tilak Varma in the team. He praised his ability to play under pressure and make smart, calculated decisions. Pathan emphasized that Verma's presence brings balance, providing reliability when the conditions get tough or the ball starts to grip, which complements the team's aggressive style.
Pathan further said, "I think this approach is really great, but I really feel that players like Tilak Verma are very important in this team. Because when there is pressure or when the ball starts to grip, he will be useful because he plays percentage cricket. Everyone in this team plays aggressively, which is great, but you need a player like Tilak Verma."
