Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is going to hold a policy workshop on developing waterway transport on the Ganga River as a component of the Waterways Development Project on Monday at Patna.

This workshop will be conducted for the first time in Bihar. The inter-ministerial discussion for this workshop will see participation from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Union Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will preside over this workshop.

Bihar Transport Minister Vijay Chaudhary, Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh, Shipping and Waterways Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, Transport Minister Sheela Kumari, and Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh will also attend it.

This ministerial workshop will focus on 11 years of development of cargo movement in Ganga (NW 1) in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. IWAI President Vijay Kumar said that this workshop will play an important role in our efforts to strengthen inland waterways transport of both cargo and passengers on National Waterway 1, i.e. Ganga River.

The day-long sessions will be followed by technical discussions, followed by policy-level discussions. This will create opportunities for regional trade, especially in the hinterland, promote connectivity, and lead to economic development of the region.
