PLFS: Urban unemployment rises to 18.8%, women's share in agriculture sector decreases; survey data
PLFS: The latest data collected in the Current Weekly Status (CWS) shows that the unemployment rate for both men and women in rural areas has decreased as compared to May. The main reason for this is the increase in the share of self-employed workers and the decrease in the number of unemployed persons.
The unemployment rate in urban areas rose to 18. 8 percent in June 2025, up from 17. 9 percent in May. The rural unemployment rate also increased slightly from 13. 7 percent to 13. 8 percent. However, the national unemployment rate remained steady at 5. 5.6 percent during this period.
According to data from the Monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the unemployment rate among women fell to 5. 5.6 percent last month from 5. 8 percent in May. During this period, the share of rural women workers in agriculture declined from 70. 2 percent in May to 69. 8 percent.
The latest data from the Current Weekly Status (CWS) indicates that unemployment rates for both men and women in rural areas decreased compared to May. This survey was conducted based on conversations with 380, 3,80,538 people from 89, 493 families nationwide, including 49, 335 families from rural areas and 40, 158 from urban areas.

According to the survey, the unemployment rate among people aged 15-29 increased from 15 percent in May to 15. 3 percent. Meanwhile, the rate among women in this age group rose to 17. 4 percent from 16. 3 percent in May, encompassing both rural and urban areas. The unemployment rate among men aged 15- 29 increased slightly from 14. 5 percent to 14. 7 percent. The survey also showed that the labor force participation rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 and above declined to 54. 2 percent in June from 54. 8 percent in May. In rural areas, the LFPR was 50.4. 1 percent, while in cities it was 50. 4 percent.
The number of fixed- term, or temporary, jobs based on work has increased across the country. The number of employees in this category grew by 9. 9.7 percent during the last fiscal year, 2024-25. According to a report by the Indian Staffing Federation (ISF), the industry added 1.39, 000 new temporary workers in 2024-25 despite cautious sentiment amid global tensions and trade conflicts. Federation Vice President Manmeet Singh stated that the information technology sector experienced a 2. 3 percent growth in recruitment during the fourth quarter of 2024-25.
