The new law, the Telecommunication Act 2023, is coming into force from June 26, 2024, i.e., today. The new law shall repeal the existing legislative framework like the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885 and the Indian Wireless Telegraph Act of 1933, in view of the attainment of technical advancement in the telecom sector and technology.

According to the Gazette notification, some provisions, including sections 1, 2, 10, and 30 of the new Telecom Act, would come into effect from June 26.

It has fixed June 26, 2024, as the date on which the provisions of many Sections 1, 2, 10-30, 42-44, 46, 47, 50-58, 61, and 62 of this new Act shall come into force.

What significant changes will be seen with the implementation of the new Telecom Act? In fact, with the new law, the right to take complete control of telecommunication services and networks in its hands in any emergency situation will remain with the government itself.

According to the Gazette notification, this shall be done by the government based on security, public order, or prevention of crimes.

According to Section 3 of the Telecommunication Act 2023, any operator desiring to establish and operate telecommunication networks or provide services related to such networks shall be under the government's authorization.
