IMD: India played a big role in helping these countries in developing weather early warning system

Indian Meteorological Department chief Mrityunjay Mahapatra has said that India is helping in developing early warning systems regarding the weather in five neighbouring countries. The neighbouring countries that India is helping include Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Mauritius. IMD Chief said that its objective is to prevent loss of life and property due to seasonal disasters. Patra said that India will play the role of elder brother and help its neighbouring countries to save themselves from natural disasters.

A new campaign named Early Warning for All has been introduced by the UN. To shield every nation from natural disasters by 2027, this campaign was launched in 2022. Speaking at the launch of the campaign's first phase, Mohapatra declared that India would assist five of the thirty countries listed. Currently, early warning systems are absent from 50% of nations. It comprises underdeveloped, tiny, and island nations. A significant amount of people and property are lost in natural disasters in these countries as a result of the absence of an early warning system.

Financial assistance will be provided on the basis of public-private partnerships to establish an early warning system regarding weather in these countries. Whereas technical support will be provided by India. According to the World Meteorological Organization report, 101 countries still do not have an early warning system for weather. According to the report, water-related disasters have increased five-fold between 1970 and 2019. Between 1970 and 2021, water-related disasters have caused 2 million deaths and $4.3 trillion in losses.
