An encounter took place between security forces and militants on Thursday night in the Imphal East district of Manipur. Several rounds of firing took place for about an hour during this. However, there is no news of any casualty in the firing.

It is said that the militants opened fire in Shantikhongbal, Yingangpokpi Uyok Ching, and Thamnapokpi Uyok Ching villages. Police said that the security forces fired a few rounds in the air to drive them away. Ethnic violence has been going on in Manipur since May last year, in which more than 250 people have been killed and thousands displaced.

Violence in the state is unabated, while chaos mounted following the brutal killing of three women and their three children in Jiribam earlier this month. At the same time, in the wake of the deteriorating situation, the Union Home Ministry has deployed five thousand additional central force personnel in the state of Manipur.

The last rites of 10 Kuki-Jo youths, who were killed in an encounter with security forces on November 11 in Jiribam town of Manipur, were performed on Thursday. The youth of the village gave a gun salute to the dead before the funeral ceremony, which was held at the Peace Ground in Chudchandrapur. Manipur Police had described these youths as militants.

Earlier, a condolence program was organized by Swadeshi Adivasi Neta Manch (ITLF) - a major organization of the Kuki-Jo community of Manipur. Family members of the deceased and others paid floral tribute to the 10 killed youths. Mizoram MLA Gangjalala and many others were present during the funeral. MLA Gangjalala is also the technical advisor to Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

The Manipur government on Thursday extended the ban on mobile internet in nine districts of the state for two more days till December 7. "The ban on mobile internet in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam has been extended till 5:15 pm of December 7," an order issued by the Home Department said.
