The scheme benefits only those farmers whose land details are registered on the PM-KISAN portal and whose bank accounts are linked to Aadhaar. The government periodically runs special campaigns at the village level to ensure that all eligible farmers can join the scheme.

In 2019, the International Food and Policy Research Institute conducted a study on this scheme. The study found that PM-KISAN funds strengthened farmers' financial position, increased investment in farms, and reduced problems related to a lack of funds.
The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a new initiative for farmers – the Farmer Registry. This will be a streamlined database, eliminating the need for farmers to submit documents repeatedly to avail benefits under various schemes. This will make it easier to provide the benefits of the scheme to the farmers at the last end.
