Cyclonic storm 'Remal' continues to wreak havoc, 17 killed, many missing in stone mine collapse in Mizoram
The dangerous cyclone Remal continues to wreak havoc. Heavy rains due to the storm have caused devastation in Bengal as well as many northeastern states. 17 people, including two children, died after a stone mine collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district amid heavy rains. In Assam, two people died and 17 others were injured in separate incidents.
17 people, including two children, died when a stone quarry collapsed in Aizawl district on Tuesday morning amid heavy rains due to the impact of Cyclone Ramal in Mizoram. Six-seven others went missing. Two people have been rescued from the incident site.
Condoling this accident, President Draupadi Murmu posted on Instagram, 'My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. Mizoram Director General of Police Anil Shukla said, 'We have recovered 17 bodies. It is feared that six or seven more people are still buried under the debris. Rescue operations are being affected due to heavy rains.
Police said the rains have also caused landslides at many other places in the state. A building collapsed due to a landslide in Salem Veng, Aizawl. Three people are missing in this incident. Aizawl has been cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6. All schools have been closed. Government employees, except those related to essential services, have been asked to work from home. In Aizawl city, some cemeteries have also been washed away by landslides. More than 150 graves have been damaged.
To assess the situation, State Chief Minister Lalduhoma met with Home Minister K. Sapdanga and Chief Secretary Renu Sharma convened an emergency meeting. For the families of those slain in rain-related disasters, the Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh. The government has set aside Rs 15 crore to address rain-related disasters caused by cyclones.
Cyclone Ramal's impact in Assam resulted in rain and strong winds that caused two fatalities and seventeen injuries in separate incidents. The names of the deceased have been confirmed as Kaushik Bardolai and Putul Gogoi. Rain caused a landslip at the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project being built by NHPC in the Lakhimpur district, which claimed Putul's life.
In Morigaon district, student Kaushik Bordoloi died after a tree fell on his auto-rickshaw. Four other people traveling on the auto-rickshaw are injured. 12 children were injured when a tree fell on a school bus in Sonitpur district. He has been admitted to the hospital.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on Twitter, 'The rains have caused landslides in Kapircherra (NH-27, Haflong to Silchar) and Therebasati (Umrangso-Dehangi Road). Trees were uprooted at many places in the state due to the storm. Educational institutions have been closed in Morigaon, Nagaon, and Dima Hasao. Ferry services have been stopped in many districts.
Many areas were submerged due to continuous rain in Manipur. Many rivers are in spate. A landslide occurred near Sinam village in Kangpokpi district on NH 37 Imphal-Silchar highway.
