PM Narendra Modi remembered this black day of democracy on the completion of 49 years of Emergency on Tuesday. He stated that today was a day to pay tributes to all those great men and women who opposed the Emergency. He said, "The black day of Emergency reminds us how the Congress Party destroyed basic freedoms and trampled the Constitution of India, which every Indian respects very much.".

He said that to remain in power, the then Congress government disregarded every democratic principle and turned the country into a prison. Anyone disagreeing with the Congress was persecuted. The most vulnerable sections were targeted and socially regressive policies were implemented.

PM Narendra Modi said, "People who imposed the Emergency have no right to show their love for our Constitution. It is these people who have applied Article 356 innumerable times; it is they who brought a bill ending freedom of the press; it is they who destroyed federalism; it is they who violated every provision of the Constitution.".

The Emergency mindset has essentially remained in the Congress, he said. They mask their contempt for the Constitution with their rhetoric, but the people of India cut through all that and saw what was happening. That is why the people have rejected them time and again.
