Diplomatic relations between India and Canada began in 1947. In this way, the relations between India and Canada are 76 years old. However, government protection for Khalistanis is not a new thing in Canada. In 1984, terrorists demanding Khalistan had bombed an Air India flight. Because of this, there was a period of tension in the relations between the two countries. The Canadian government at that time was also giving protection to Khalistani terrorists. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Canada in 2015, relations between the two countries reached the level of strategic partnership. Due to the growing power of China, Canada also focused on strengthening relations with India. Canada may have to suffer a lot due to deteriorating relations with India because considering India's stature in the current world order, its Western allies will also hesitate to speak against India. Canada may also have to pay a heavy price on the economic front.

According to the 2021 census, there are about 14 lakh people of Indian origin living in Canada. This is 3.7 percent of the total population of Canada. About 7 lakh population are Sikhs. The Sikh population has a good influence on Canadian politics. For this reason, Justin Trudeau's government is giving protection to the supporters of Khalistan. The Canadian government is also putting its relations with India at stake for this.

According to data from Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a total of 3,19,000 Indians were living with valid study visas in 2022. A total of 5 lakh international students came to Canada in 2022, out of which 2,26,450 students were from India. That means the share of Indians in the total international students was about 41 percent. If relations between Canada and India worsen and the government bans Indian students from going to Canada, it will cause a huge loss to the Canadian economy. International students bring $30 billion to the Canadian economy every year. Obviously, Indian students have a big contribution to this.

Bilateral trade between India and Canada has increased rapidly and is expected to reach $8.16 billion in 2022-23. India's exports to Canada are $4.1 billion while Canada's exports to India are $4.06 billion. Canada's pension fund has invested $45 billion in India.

Canada is the world's ninth-largest economy with a GDP of $2.2 trillion. The major contribution to the Canadian economy is the exploitation and export of natural resources. Canada exports essential goods to big countries like America and India.

In 1984, Air India Flight 182 flew from Toronto, Canada to Mumbai. This was a Boeing 747 plane. It was named after the Kushan dynasty ruler 'Emperor Kanishka'. This flight never reached Mumbai because all 329 passengers were killed in the bomb blast. This bomb blast was carried out by Sikh terrorists demanding a separate Khalistan in India. Kripal Commission had told in its investigation that it was a bomb blast. Later, the Central Bureau of Investigation found in its investigation that the terrorist organization Babbar Khalsa International was responsible for this blast.

The investigation into this blast in Canada was very slow and after decades only one person, Inderjit Singh Rewat, was convicted for it. At present, the way Canadian Prime Minister Justin Tudeau is giving protection to Khalistanis, in the same way his father Pierre Tudeau had refused to extradite Khalistani terrorist Talwinder Singh Parmar to India in 1982. Parmar is considered the mastermind of the Kanishka bomb case. Pierre Trudeau was the Prime Minister of Canada at that time.
