America and Britain are two of six countries that have put travel bans on their citizens for Assam and the rest of the Northeast. Actually, this action has been taken because of the law and order situation in the Northeast. On Tuesday, Assam Tourism Minister Ranjit Kumar Das told the Assembly this. Tourism Minister Das was replying to the question of Congress MLA Rakibuddin Ahmed.

These countries that have imposed travel bans include America, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Canada, and Switzerland. In the meantime, the minister said the tourism department on behalf of the state government is in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs to get this ban removed by these countries.

At the same time, the minister said that these 6 countries have taken this decision in view of the law and order situation. This ban has been imposed for Assam as well as other northeastern states. He said a high-level team from Australia had recently visited Assam to consider this aspect.

Tourism Minister Ranjit Kumar Das said the number of tourists has also come down. He said the number of tourists visiting Assam in the financial year 2022-23 was 98,31,141, which dropped to 70,67,335 in 2023-24. Apart from this, this number has come down to 67,88,565 in 2024-25 (till January).

Also, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that the state government is in touch with the embassies of various countries to change the negative perceptions about Northeast India. He argues that Assam and most of the states in the region have been peaceful in the last five years, so it is time to revise these travel advisories.
