The Supreme Court has refused to consider the petition against three new criminal laws. Advocate Vishal Tiwari had filed a petition in the apex court against the three new criminal laws.

The petition claimed that there were many inconsistencies in the new criminal laws. It was said in the petition that a ban has been sought from implementing new criminal laws. It is said that these laws were passed by the Parliament without any discussion and that the opposition MPs were suspended as a result. The petition asked for the creation of an expert committee to assess the viability of the criminal laws. According to the petition, the country will come under police rule and the new criminal laws are far stricter. The citizens of the nation are violating their fundamental rights by these laws. Compared to English law, these laws are even stricter. The duration that someone may be held in police custody was limited to 15 days under the previous laws, but the new laws have extended this period to 90 days.

In the new laws, the treason law is being brought in a new avatar and there is a provision for punishment up to life imprisonment for its culprits. On December 21, three new criminal laws – the Indian Judicial Code, the Indian Civil Defense Code, and the Indian Evidence Bill – were approved in the Lok Sabha. These laws will replace the existing laws Indian Penal Code (IPC), CrPC, and Indian Evidence Act. President Draupadi Murmu had approved these laws on 25 December.
