A nationwide action is underway to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile, the mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape, has called for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation.

Nirbhaya's mother said that CM Mamata Banerjee has failed to handle the situation after the protests against the rape and murder of the doctor.

Speaking to the news agency PTI, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to divert people's attention by protesting. Let us tell you that CM Banerjee had held a rally in Kolkata demanding the death penalty for the culprits of the rape case.

Asha Devi said, "Instead of using her authority to take action against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public."

She said, "She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits by fulfilling her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation."

Asha Devi further said that until the central and state governments are not serious about getting speedy punishment for the rapists from the court, such atrocities will continue to happen every day across the country. She said that when girls are not safe in Kolkata's medical college and such brutality is done to them, then the condition of women's safety in the country can be understood.
