The Vedanta Group's appeal against the closure of the Sterlite copper unit in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, will be heard by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra on Tuesday asked for the circulation of brief notes of their respective arguments in the case. Senior advocate Shyam Dewan will begin the arguments on behalf of the Vedanta Group company.

In addition to the corporation, senior counsel Vikas Singh of the NGO Manu Neeti Foundation has petitioned the Supreme Court for an immediate hearing on the subject, stating that the Sterlite Copper Unit workers are going through terrible hardships.

The Supreme Court had previously declared that it had instructed the Registrar to set aside two specific days to hear the Vedanta Group's case. In May of last year, the Tamil Nadu government was urged by the Supreme Court to decide in line with its directive from April 10.

As a result, it authorised Vedanta Group to continue operating its Sterlite Copper Unit in Tuticorin, under the guidance of a local monitoring committee. The apex court, in its order dated April 10, had also allowed the company to extract the remaining gypsum from the plant.
