The Government of India has shared updated information on the progress of the Production Linked Incentive scheme for the automobile and auto component industry. Accordingly, data shows steady progress on all three fronts-participation, localization, and incentive payments.

The Union Cabinet approved the Auto PLI scheme on September 15, 2021, with a total budget of ₹25,938 crore. This scheme will incentivize more domestic manufacturing of AAT products and thereby reduce import dependence, along with the creation of new employment opportunities within the country.

As of November 30, 2025, a total of 82 companies have been approved under the scheme. It includes both the Champion OEMs, that is, the vehicle manufacturers, and Component Champions, the auto component manufacturers. These companies operate 278 approved manufacturing units across the country.

State-wise, Maharashtra has emerged as the largest manufacturing hub, with 85 units. This is followed by Tamil Nadu with 49, Haryana with 43, and Karnataka with 29.

The total allocation for the scheme is ₹25,938 crore. So far, incentives worth ₹1,350.83 crore have been disbursed, and currently, 5 companies have benefited. The government aims to achieve an eligible sales value of ₹2.31 lakh crore by FY 2027-28, compared to the 2019-20 base level. Sales of ₹32,879 crore have been recorded under the scheme as of September 30, 2025.

To qualify for PLI incentives, companies must achieve a minimum of 50 percent domestic value addition (DVA). This aims to strengthen the country's local supply chain and reduce dependence on imports.

As of March 2025, six companies in the OEM category have received DVA certification, covering 66 approved vehicle variants.

In the component category, seven companies have received DVA certification, covering 22 component variants. DVA is calculated using a standardized process jointly developed by authorized testing agencies for transparency.

The PLI Auto Scheme covers 19 AAT vehicle categories and 103 AAT component categories. Its focus is on battery electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle technologies, spanning two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, tractors, and defense vehicles. Priority is given to advanced EV systems and domestically manufactured components.

Approved vehicle manufacturers include Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, Kia India, Suzuki Motor Gujarat, Ashok Leyland, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Ola Electric, and Piaggio.

Companies in the auto component sector include Bosch, Bharat Forge, Ceat, Sundaram Fasteners, Schaeffler India, Madrasan Sumi, Uno Minda, Varroc Engineering, and Wabco India.

The government says the PLI auto scheme has accelerated the adoption of electric vehicles. Furthermore, as more companies become eligible for incentives, localization across the EV value chain is also rapidly expanding across the AAT product categories.
