Central government took steps to reduce prices, 'Supply more onions in retail markets',
Onion Supply: In view of the rising prices of onions, the central government has decided to supply more onions in the retail market. After this decision of the government, it is being speculated that the prices of onions may come down soon.
The government has said that in order to stabilise the prices, they will sell more onions from the buffer stock in retail markets despite the substantial rise in prices. Government data indicates that onions in Delhi cost Rs 67 per kg at retail. The country's average retail price is Rs 58 per kg.
According to officials, due to the festive season and the closure of mandis, there has been a temporary disruption in the supply of onions in some markets in the last two to three days. To overcome this, the government has decided to increase the supply. NAFED has dispatched two more racks to Delhi-NCR and one more to Guwahati this week.
According to the official, more supply of onion will be made from NCCF through both rail and road transport. The government has also decided to unload onions kept in cold storage in Sonipat to meet the needs of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and others. Bureau
The government this year procured 4.7 lakh tonnes of Rabi onion to keep the price stable. Its sale started on September 5 through retail sale at Rs 35 per kg as well as wholesale sales in major mandis across the country. So far, over 1.50 lakh tonnes of onion in the buffer have been sent to consumer centers through trucks by road transport from Nashik and other centres.
Wholesale price descent in mandis is reflecting in retail markets with prices of tomatoes falling, the government has said. The weekly average price in Azadpur Mandi is 27 percent lower at Rs 4,000 per quintal and the average price in Pimpalgaon in Maharashtra has fallen by 35 percent to Rs 2,250 per quintal.
