Australia Prepares for Tough Tours of India, England, South Africa with Updated Squad
Australia Cricket Announces Central Contract 2025-26: Weatherald played some good innings opening the innings with Travis Head in the Ashes. After being included in the central contract, it is believed that Cricket Australia has decided to give him more opportunities as an opener. Weatherald has also shown excellent form playing for Tasmania in domestic cricket.
Cricket Australia has announced the central contracts for the 2026-27 season. Jake Weatherald remains on the list, while Jhye Richardson and Glenn Maxwell have been dropped. Michael Neser earned his spot through excellent Ashes performance, joining Brendan Doggett and Todd Murphy. Weatherald, who scored well opening with Travis Head during the Ashes, is expected to get more opportunities as an opener, especially after being included in the contract. He has also displayed strong form in domestic cricket for Tasmania.
The contracts of retired Usman Khawaja, young batsman Sam Constas, Lance Morris, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, and Matt Short have been terminated, along with Richardson. Richardson's exclusion is notable because he recently returned to the Test team after shoulder surgery to face England. He’s expected to play again later this year.
Morris's contract has ended; he has been out since last August due to a stress fracture and surgery. Constas was dropped from the Test team after the West Indies tour last year, and his contract was not renewed. Matt Renshaw also was not included.

Maxwell now plays only one format, so his omission was inevitable. Chief selector George Bailey stated, "The contract list has been balanced by giving players time to perform, considering the upcoming schedule that includes series in South Africa, India, and England, with varied weather conditions, along with domestic matches."
He added, "We will also need players beyond those contracted, and we plan to utilize them." The selection panel awarded 21 of 24 available contracts this year, down from 23 last year, with a greater emphasis on Test cricket amidst concerns over franchise cricket interest due to high player salaries.
Cricket Australia’s centrally contracted players include Xavier Bartlett, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Brendan Doggett, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster, and Adam Zampa.
