“Are You Sure We’re Playing the World Cup?”: Liton Das Sparks Bangladesh T20 WC Debate

Bangladesh T20 World Cup participation: Bangladesh captain Liton Das finally reacts to their involvement in the T20 World Cup and gives a surprising press conference statement. This is the first reaction from Liton since Rangpur’s defeat to Sylhet Titans in the T20 World Cup qualifier match. Sylhet only had to score 112 runs to win the match but managed to do so on the last ball when they scored a six from Chris Woakes. After Rangpur’s defeat and subsequent exit from the tournament, Liton Das conducted a press conference where he was asked about the quality of the slow pitches of the BPL to prepare for the T20 World Cup. Liton responded directly, "Are you sure we're going to play in the World Cup?"

Liton said, "There's still a long way to go before the World Cup, and we're not even sure if we'll even go." Regarding the slow wicket in the qualifiers, he said, "It's by no means ideal for T20 cricket. We expected a much better wicket for a qualifier match."

When asked if the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had discussed the World Cup decision with him, Liton flatly denied it. When asked if such a discussion should have taken place, given he is the T20I captain, he replied, "I don't know, but it hasn't happened with me."

Indeed, Bangladesh has rejected the ICC's conditions for participating in the T20 World Cup in India. Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul stated that Bangladesh will not accept pressure. He added, "If the ICC, under pressure from the Indian Cricket Board, imposes unfair conditions on us, we will not accept them."

Nazrul also pointed to past examples. He said that there have been instances in international cricket where the ICC has changed the venue after India refused to play in Pakistan. "We have appropriately requested a change of venue."

It's worth noting that this issue has heated up after Mustafizur Rahman was excluded from IPL 2026. The BCB reiterated that it will not tour India under the current circumstances. Although ICC sources say Bangladesh has been given a deadline of January 21, the BCB has denied this. Media Committee Chairman Amjad Hussain stated that no specific date has been set. He added that discussions are ongoing and the ICC will respond later.
