The effect of the 50 percent tariff imposed on India by US President Donald Trump is being seen on exports. American importers have put orders for Indian goods on hold, and at present, there seems to be no solution to this problem. India's tea industry has also been badly affected by Trump's tariff at this time.

The Indian Tea Association has expressed concern over the US tariff and said that America is an important market for tea for India. The association has stated that the continuous decline in tea prices and instability in the export market pose a threat to the industry's existence.

According to a figure, in 2024, India exported 17 million kg of tea to the US. This year, till May alone, 62.6 lakh kg of tea has been exported to the US. However, the association believes that the 50 percent tariff imposed on Indian products will significantly limit the export of tea to the US.

The Indian Tea Association had earlier demanded the implementation of a minimum permanent price for tea, pleading to protect the tea industry. Now the association has said that traditional tea production should be encouraged to meet global demand.

It has also been demanded that the Government of India should make arrangements to provide equal opportunities in the export market to compete with Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Actually, the governments of Indonesia and Sri Lanka provide many incentives in subsidies and exports. There has also been a demand to ban the import of low-quality tea.
