US and Korea expressed concern over India's decision to ban laptop imports, said- trade will be affected, requested reconsideration

In the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting, America, China, Korea, and Chinese Taipei expressed concern over India's decision to impose an import ban on laptops and computers. This concern was highlighted in the meeting of the Market Access Committee of WTO.

America has said that after the implementation of this decision, the trade of these products will be affected, including American exports to India. The US has also said that this decision is creating uncertainty for exporters and downstream users.

Let us tell you that on August 3, India banned several IT hardware products like laptops, personal computers (including tablet computers), microcomputers, large or mainframe computers, and some data processing machines with the aim of promoting domestic manufacturing and cutting imports. But banned imports from countries like China. This decision will come into effect from November 1.

Recently, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that India will not impose licensing requirements on imports but will only monitor their incoming shipments.

Korea stressed that the ban imposed by India could create unnecessary trade barriers.

Korea has requested India to reconsider the sanctions decision and provide detailed clarifications and information on the issue, including the timeline for its implementation.

India has imported personal computers including laptops worth US $ 5.33 billion in the last financial year i.e. 2022-23, whereas a year before that i.e. in the financial year 2021-22, India has imported US $ 7.37 billion.
