The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Uttarakhand in October this year. According to Patrika, the state government is working fast towards implementing UCC. Recently, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had also indicated that UCC can be implemented in the state soon. President Draupadi Murmu has approved the bill passed by the state government in March this year. Under UCC, now marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships will be controlled in the state. After the implementation of UCC, all the private laws of the state will be abolished.

In this regard, Pushkar Singh Dhami had said in the Assembly, “This law is of equality, uniformity and equal rights. There were many doubts about it, but everything became clear after two days of discussion in the assembly. This law is not against anyone. It is for those women who have to face problems due to social reasons.” He further said, “This will strengthen their (women's) confidence. This law is for the overall development of women.”

Rules have also been made regarding marriage, property sharing, and live-in relationships. In this law, it has been said that couples living in live-in relationships should get themselves registered in such a situation so that their safety can be ensured by the government in any adverse situation.

There was a lot of opposition to this. People opposing this law did not even believe that there is such a thing as a live-in relationship and even if it does exist, then giving information about it to the government and getting it registered is a violation of the right to privacy. Because information regarding one's relationship with another person is personal, providing it to the government is a violation of the right to privacy.
