To make traffic fine payment easier in Delhi, the Transport Department is planning to use WhatsApp as a new tool to send and pay traffic challans. The Transport Department intends to make use of WhatsApp for the purpose of sending traffic challans for payment through this tool. According to a recent tender that has been issued by the Delhi government, this process will send e-challans straight to traffic rule violators via WhatsApp soon. Which would have to be paid with an online link in an easy manner.

There are about 1000 to 1500 traffic challans every day on an average in the national capital. Out of these, a majority are e-challans. Its information is provided to the owner of the concerned vehicle via SMS and e-mail. In this system, once this system is activated, violators will get a WhatsApp message. It will include the offense, amount of fine, and a link to make the payment directly through Google Pay, BHIM, or any other popular UPI gateway. The system has been designed to send the messages in Hindi and English as well. So that it would be easy for more and more people to use the same.

This will facilitate a great amount of information, starting from the very first fine notice, followed by reminders and confirmation of payment, along with the receipt. This framework will also support different media formats: photos, PDFs, videos. This will broaden the transparency and accessibility.

Whereas today, fines on Delhi traffic are paid through the website Parivaha echallan, after the launch of this WhatsApp-based service, the payment of fines would be as convenient as online shopping. Instant alerts when a new challan is issued or if dues are pending will directly go to the WhatsApp account of the user.

According to officials, WhatsApp has become the most commonly used message channel for communication by people. Therefore, challan information will also be sent on WhatsApp. However, if the concerned vehicle owner is not registered with WhatsApp, in this case the challan will also be sent through SMS and email (if any).
