Somy Ali Urges End to Mental Health Stigma
Actress Somy Ali calls for open mental health discussions, citing icons like Guru Dutt and Parveen Babi, urging society to break the stigma.
Actress and activist Somy Ali, founder of the U.S.-based NGO No More Tears, has issued a passionate plea to destigmatize mental health discussions. In a recent Instagram post, Ali highlighted the tragic losses of iconic figures such as Guru Dutt, Parveen Babi, Marilyn Monroe, and Robin Williams, emphasizing how societal taboos surrounding mental health have contributed to their untimely deaths. Her message underscores the urgent need for open conversations and education to address mental health challenges and prevent further tragedies.
Ali, who has a background in psychology, pointed to the Hindi film industry’s legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt as a poignant example. Known for masterpieces like Pyaasa and Kaghaz Ke Phool, Dutt struggled with severe depression and died by suicide at age 39 after multiple attempts. “Our society and its stigma attached to ignoring mental health has gone on for generations,” Ali wrote, noting that this stigma has persisted for far too long. She also referenced actress Parveen Babi, who battled paranoid schizophrenia, and other global icons like Monroe and Williams, suggesting that open dialogue and support could have saved their lives.
Through her work with No More Tears, Ali tirelessly supports victims of domestic violence and rape, many of whom face mental health struggles. She argues that dismissing mental health as a taboo subject perpetuates suffering and prevents people from seeking help. “Let’s make mental health a common discussion forum rather than deeming people hysterical and crazy as if we are still living in the 1940s,” she urged. Ali called for breaking the cycle of discomfort around mental health conversations, advocating for education and awareness to normalize these discussions.
