The Indian Railway is providing a total subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore to all categories of passengers every year, which also includes a discount of 46 percent on each ticket. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Vaishnva said in response to numerous questions raised in the Lok Sabha, seeking restoration of discounts to various categories of rail passengers that if the price was Rs 100, the railway charges only Rs 54 for it, meaning as much as 46 percent discount is given to its passenger.

"A total subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore is given by the Indian Railways to all class passengers every year," Vaishnaw said during Question Hour. Replying to another question on the rapid train service, he said the railways has already launched such a service - Namo Bharat Rapid Rail - between Bhuj and Ahmedabad and the passenger satisfaction level is very high due to its excellent service.

Officials said the improvement in connectivity between the destinations was a result of Namo Bharat trains taking only 5 minutes and 45 minutes for travelers to cover the 359-bk distance between Bhuj and Ahmedabad, that too after stopping at 'many' stations.
