Government Approves Unlicensed 6GHz Spectrum to Boost Wi-Fi Speed in India
Department of Telecommunications: The Central Government has approved the unlicensed use of 500 MHz spectrum in the lower 6 GHz band to speed up and improve Wi-Fi services in the country.
The Central Government has made a significant move to accelerate and enhance the Wi-Fi network in the nation. The Department of Telecommunications has approved the use of the unlicensed band of 500 MHz of spectrum in the low 6 GHz band. It is likely to enhance the speed of the Wi-Fi network.
According to a notification issued by DoT, the 5925 to 6425 MHz frequency range can now be used for low-power indoor and very low-power outdoor Wi-Fi systems. This will not require any licensing or spectrum allocation. This means that Wi-Fi devices will be able to operate on this spectrum without government permission.
This decision was taken by the government in response to a draft notification that was sent out some six months ago. There are, however, some conditions that have been laid down for the application of this frequency band. This frequency band will be shared and it must be ensured that no other communication service is affected. The strength of the signals has also been restricted so that it can be used for low-power devices such as Wi-Fi.

The DoT has also clarified that the upper portion of the 6 GHz band will be reserved for mobile services in the future. This will help maintain a balance between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Telecom and IT experts believe that this decision will promote new technologies like Wi-Fi 7. This will improve video streaming, online learning, office work, and the quality of digital services. Overall, this permission for unlicensed spectrum is considered a significant step towards strengthening the country's digital connectivity.
