Foreign investors continue to sell amid boom in markets, crores have been withdrawn
At the beginning of the year i.e. in January, FPIs withdrew Rs 25744 crore from the equity markets. After this, in February and March, foreign investors invested Rs 1539 crore and Rs 35098 crore respectively in the equity markets. However, in April, FPIs again became sellers and withdrew Rs 8671 crore from the equity markets. After this, a withdrawal of Rs 25586 crore was made in May.

There is a record boom in the Indian stock markets. Despite this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remain sellers in the domestic markets for the second and third consecutive months. According to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), in the first five sessions of June, FPIs have withdrawn Rs 14,794 crore from the equity markets. The performance of the calendar year 2024 has not been better in terms of FPI investment.
FPIs withdrew Rs 25,744 crore from equity markets in January of this year. FPIs' net withdrawal from equity for the calendar year has totaled Rs 38,158 crore as of June 7. In the calendar year 2023, FPIs invested a total of Rs 1.71 lakh crore in Indian equity markets. Market experts say that due to election uncertainty, high valuations, and investment in China, FPIs have been withdrawing from the Indian markets for the last few days.
Now that the election results are out and the way is cleared for the formation of the NDA government for the third time under the leadership of Narendra Modi, FPIs can start investing in Indian markets again. Investment continues in bond markets Unlike equity, FPIs continue to invest in domestic bond markets. So far in June, FPIs have invested Rs 4,008 crore in the bond markets.
Talking about the entire calendar year, FPIs have withdrawn Rs 10,949 crore from the bond markets only in April. In all other months, FPIs have been net investors in the bond markets. FPIs had invested the highest amount of Rs 22,419 crore in the bond markets in February this year. In the entire calendar year, FPIs have invested Rs 57,678 crore in the bond markets. In 2023, a net investment of Rs 68,663 crore was made in the bond markets.
