Foreign investors continue to sell amid boom in markets, crores have been withdrawn

There is a record boom in the Indian stock markets. Despite this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remain sellers in the domestic markets for the second and third consecutive months. According to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), in the first five sessions of June, FPIs have withdrawn Rs 14,794 crore from the equity markets. The performance of the calendar year 2024 has not been better in terms of FPI investment.

FPIs withdrew Rs 25,744 crore from equity markets in January of this year. Following that, in February and March, foreign investors invested Rs 1,539 crore and Rs 35,098 crore, respectively, in equity markets. However, in April, FPIs resumed selling and withdrew Rs 8,671 crore from the equity markets. Following this, a withdrawal of Rs 25,586 crore was made in May.

FPIs' net withdrawal from equity for the calendar year has totaled Rs 38,158 crore as of June 7. In the calendar year 2023, FPIs invested a total of Rs 1.71 lakh crore in Indian equity markets. Market experts say that due to election uncertainty, high valuations, and investment in China, FPIs have been withdrawing from the Indian markets for the last few days.
