CBI chargesheet reveals Sandip Ghosh helped two groups get hospital contracts

The Central Bureau of Investigation has alleged in its chargesheet filed recently that Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of RG Kar College and Hospital, helped two groups to get contracts for the hospital. Though the special court has taken this chargesheet of the CBI on record, it has not yet taken cognizance of it because the West Bengal government has not given permission to prosecute Sandip Ghosh and others.

The CBI, in its chargesheet, has named Sandip Ghosh, former house staff of the medical college Ashish Kumar Pandey and businessmen Biplab Singha of Maa Tara Traders, Suman Hazra of Hazra Medical, and Afsar Ali Khan of Ishan Cafe.

The CBI, in its chargesheet filed before a special CBI court in Alipore, has alleged that Sandip Ghosh helped two groups - one run by Singha and Hazra and the other run by Khan - in securing several contracts of the hospital. The special judge said, "On careful study, it was found that the sanction order of the competent authority has not been received yet. Accordingly, cognizance has not been taken without sanction. It is to be placed on record."

The hospital hit the headlines when a trainee doctor was found dead in the auditorium of the Chest Department on August 10. It emerged that she was allegedly raped and murdered by a civilian volunteer Sanjay Roy on the intervening night of August 9-10. Sandip Ghosh was also under the scanner in the case for alleged delay in the investigation. On grounds of alleged financial anomalies in the hospital during his tenure, the Calcutta High Court ordered an investigation into the matter.

The high court order came on a plea by Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the facility, who sought an Enforcement Directorate probe into several cases of alleged financial misconduct at the institute during Sandip Ghosh's tenure as principal. Sandip Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 to September 2023. He was transferred from RG Kar in October last year but was sent back to the post within a month without any plausible reason.
