This year's apple export to India is a cause for celebration for US lawmakers and apple growers. This is because Apple exports are sixteen times higher than they were the previous year. Following India's decision to eliminate the 20 per cent retaliatory duty imposed on American goods in 2019, this export has increased.

This year, Washington state apple growers sent approximately one million boxes of apples to India—a 16-fold increase over the previous year. The Port of Seattle celebrated the accomplishment on Tuesday. "This is a new milestone in India-US trade relations," stated Congresswoman Maria Cantwell. Apple growers from Central Washington, labour and port officials, and Prakash Gupta, Consul General of the Indian Consulate in Seattle, were present on this momentous occasion.

Business returned to normal this crop season after tariffs were removed during PM Narendra Modi's historic US visit. Washington growers have shipped about 1,190,000 40-pound boxes of apples to India this season, according to the Washington State Apple Commission. Total apple sales from Washington to India so far are estimated at $19.5 million, even though growers have completed only half the season.

Today is a celebration, Cantwell said, because, for the last five years, we have not seen apples going to India. The apple export market to India had declined due to the 20% increase in import duty on apples.

In March 2019, New Delhi imposed multiple tariffs on US products, including apples, against the then-Trump administration's decision to revoke India's trade benefits under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programme. This had a very bad impact on American business.
