The Lanka Indian Oil Corporation (LIOC) has assured Sri Lanka that fuel supplies will continue to be made to the country. This will ensure that the country’s energy needs are well taken care of in spite of the war in West Asia. This comes after Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath urged India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to ensure that there are no interruptions in the supply chain of energy to Sri Lanka.

LIOC Managing Director K. Raghu, addressing a gathering of management students in Colombo on Saturday, said, "As the Managing Director of Lanka IOC, I just want to tell the people that you are all in safe hands." He further stated that we will maintain fuel supplies and provide energy security to the country, which is very important.

  • LIOC is a significant energy provider in Sri Lanka, operating 200 fuel stations across the country.
  • The company holds 20% of the market share. LIOC’s presence in Sri Lanka began in 2003, and it had a 20-year contract, which was extended up to 2023.
  • The company assisted Sri Lankans during the economic crisis in mid-2022, where people had to wait in long lines at fuel stations.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath discussed this matter with Dr. S. Jaishankar during his official visit to India on March 6. Herath expressed confidence that his request would help maintain the island nation's energy supply chain. LIOC's assurance comes at a time when global energy markets remain uncertain due to the conflict in West Asia.
