India Semiconductor Mission: 4 Major Projects Approved, ₹1.5 Lakh Cr Investment Expected
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that India will soon get its first semiconductor chip, which Prime Minister Modi will dedicate to the country. A unit built at a cost of Rs 7,600 crore was inaugurated in Sanand, Gujarat. This project has been established with 50% financial assistance under the India Semiconductor Mission.

Union Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced on Thursday that India will soon produce its first semiconductor chip. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate this inaugural chip to the nation. Vaishnav also inaugurated the advanced outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility of CG Semi Private Limited in Sanand district, Gujarat.
Vaishnav stated that this facility has been established by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited in partnership with Renesas Electronics of America and Stars Microelectronics of Thailand, with an investment of approximately Rs 7,600 crore. Additionally, this project will receive 50% financial support from the India Semiconductor Mission.
The Union Minister described this milestone as a significant step in India's semiconductor journey. He mentioned visiting plants of Micron, Cans, and Dholera, noting that work is progressing rapidly across all sites. “This dream is now becoming a reality,” he added. He emphasized that the India Semiconductor Mission is not only focused on building factories but also on developing talent.
He highlighted an estimated global shortage of about 1 million specialists by 2032. To address this gap, India has partnered with 270 universities, equipping students with the world's most advanced chip design tools. By 2025, students have completed 12 lakh design hours, and 17 institutes have designed chips and advanced them to the final stages of production.
The central government launched a Rs 76,000 crore semiconductor scheme in December 2021. So far, four major projects have been approved, including those in Dholera (Assam) and Sanand (Gujarat). These projects are expected to attract investments of around Rs 1.5 lakh crore and achieve a production capacity of about 70 million chips per day. The government has also approved four additional semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), with two in Odisha and one each in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.
