World champion D Gukesh has become the highest-ranked player in India. He has risen to fourth place in the world chess rankings. The excellent performance of Gukesh continues in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament held at Wijk on Zee, Netherlands. In the fifth-round match, he defeated Vincent Keymer representing Germany with black pieces. With this win, Gukesh benefited in the ranking. He left compatriot Arjun Erigesi behind in the ranking. Gukesh has 3.5 points in the tournament. With eight-rounds of matches yet to be played in the tournament, Gukesh is lying joint third behind compatriot R Praggnanandhaa and Uzbekistan's Abdusattorov Nodirbek with two wins and three draws each.

Gukesh had tried to prolong the matches against Liren in the World Championship. He wanted Liren to get tired. Vincent also adopted the same strategy against Gukesh. He tried and prolong the match. He was not in a strong position from the beginning but he dragged the match till the 72nd move. The match between the two lasted for six hours. Gukesh has to face another teammate after Vincent. Pentala Harikrishna was also a part of Gukesh's World Championship team.
