Markets can be tracked in real time. Artificial intelligence can analyse millions of data points in seconds. Algorithms can predict consumer behaviour. Venture capital can finance ideas before they become businesses. Social media can turn an unknown entrepreneur into a global brand overnight.
And yet, despite all this technology, one thing has not changed:
Business is still ultimately a human game.
Fear, ambition, greed, loyalty, betrayal, competition, uncertainty, ego, courage and responsibility continue to determine the fate of organisations.
This is why a conversation that took place thousands of years ago remains surprisingly relevant to the modern boardroom.
On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna faced a crisis of decision. He had knowledge, ability, resources and a defined objective, yet he was paralysed by confusion.
His charioteer, Krishna, did not hand him a shortcut.
He gave him perspective.
The Bhagavad Gita is not a business-management textbook. Nor should it be reduced to one. But its philosophy contains principles that can profoundly influence how entrepreneurs think about leadership, wealth, competition, risk and responsibility.

“कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्तेमाफलेषुकदाचन।”

The outcome, however, is influenced by forces beyond you.
This is perhaps the healthiest philosophy an entrepreneur can develop:
Be obsessed with excellence in action, not emotionally dependent on immediate results.
The second lesson: Profit without Dharma is incomplete success
Capital is the oxygen of business.
Profit allows companies to survive, employees to prosper, investors to earn returns and new ideas to receive funding.
There is nothing inherently wrong with the pursuit of wealth.
The problem begins when wealth becomes the only measure of success.
The Gita places enormous importance on Dharma—the principle of duty, responsibility and righteous conduct.
Translated into modern business language, Dharma could mean doing business in a manner that respects one’s responsibilities towards customers, employees, investors, partners, regulators and society.
It means asking a difficult question:
“Even if I can do something, should I do it?”
That question is increasingly important in an age of artificial intelligence, financial engineering, aggressive marketing and rapid capital formation.
A company may be legally clever and still ethically wrong.
A business may be profitable and still destroy trust.
A promoter may become wealthy while leaving behind an organisation that nobody respects.
That is not sustainable success.
Profit measures financial performance. Dharma measures the quality of the journey.

Krishna was perhaps one of history’s greatest examples of contextual strategic thinking.
He understood that the same solution does not work in every situation.

A strategy that works in Mumbai may fail in Lucknow.
A model successful for a technology startup may be disastrous for an infrastructure company.

Arjuna was not weak.

Yet even he experienced doubt.

Competition should push companies to become better.

The objective should not be to destroy everyone else.
It should be to become so valuable that customers choose you.
Study competitors carefully.
Learn from them.
Respect their strengths.
But do not build your entire identity around defeating them.
A company obsessed with competitors eventually forgets its customers.
The eighth lesson: Wealth carries responsibility
India’s entrepreneurial story is changing.
A new generation is entering finance, infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, healthcare, renewable energy, real estate, logistics and professional services.
As Indian businesses grow, so does their responsibility.
The question of tomorrow will not simply be:
How much wealth can an entrepreneur create?

What kind of wealth are we creating, and what are we doing with it?

The entrepreneur’s Kurukshetra
Every entrepreneur eventually encounters a Kurukshetra.
It may not be a battlefield.
It may be a balance sheet.
A failed project.
A difficult partner.
A regulatory challenge.
A collapsing market.
A major competitor.
A leadership crisis.
Or simply a moment when the entrepreneur has to choose between what is easy and what is right.
At that moment, technology cannot make the decision for us.
Artificial intelligence can analyse.
Data can inform.
Consultants can advise.
But ultimately, someone has to decide.
That is where leadership begins.
And perhaps this is the greatest relevance of Krishna to modern business.
Krishna did not promise Arjuna an easy victory.
He gave him clarity.
He did not remove the battlefield.
He prepared him to face it.
Modern entrepreneurs should expect no different.
Business will remain uncertain.
Markets will remain unpredictable.
Competition will remain intense.
Failure will remain possible.
But the entrepreneur who combines ambition with discipline, strategy with adaptability, wealth creation with responsibility, and confidence with humility will possess something far more valuable than a business plan.
He will possess a philosophy of leadership.
From Kurukshetra to the Boardroom
The world has changed dramatically since the Gita was spoken.
The chariot has become the automobile.
The battlefield has become the boardroom.
The messenger has become the smartphone.
The marketplace has become global.
And artificial intelligence is beginning to transform the very definition of work.
But the human questions remain the same.
How should power be used?
How should difficult decisions be made?
How should ambition be controlled?
What is our responsibility towards others?
And what does success ultimately mean?
Perhaps the modern entrepreneur does not need to search for an entirely new philosophy.
Perhaps some of the answers are already there.
Not as a formula for making money.
Not as a guarantee of victory.
But as a framework for becoming a better decision-maker, a more disciplined leader and a more responsible creator of wealth.
The greatest lesson of Krishna in business may therefore be remarkably simple:
- Work with excellence.
- Think with clarity.
- Act with courage.
- Lead without ego.
- Create wealth with responsibility.
- And never allow the pursuit of success to become greater than the purpose for which you began.
The marketplace will always reward performance.
But history remembers something more enduring:
Character.
And that may be the most valuable business lesson Krishna left for us.
