The Department of Telecom and the Telecom Regulatory Authority have been actively working to address the problem of spam calls. Efforts by the government to curb fraud and cheating through spurious calls have increased.
To increase awareness among the public, telecom operators have been asked by the Department of Telecom to use awareness messages in place of caller tunes before call connection for three months. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that the government has made efforts to block 1.3 crore (13 million) spurious calls a day.
During his keynote address at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shared information about the "Sanchar Sathi" portal. He informed that this portal is playing a big role in preventing fake calls and tracking stolen mobile devices.
He informed that so far 2.6 crore (26 million) mobile devices related to cyber fraud have been blocked through the Sanchar Sathi portal. Apart from this, 1.6 crore (16 million) stolen mobile devices have also been traced. With the help of this portal, 86 percent of spoof or fake calls have been traced and blocked. Under this initiative, 1.3 crore spam calls are being successfully blocked every day.
Recently, the Telecom Department of the Government of India has launched a mobile app for the "Sanchar Sathi" portal, which is available for both Android and iPhone users. Through this app, users can not only complain about fake calls but can also detect fake SIM cards registered in their name.
Apart from this, telecom companies have been instructed to adopt AI (Artificial Intelligence) based spam detection technology. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) have already implemented AI-powered spam call systems, saving millions of users from fraudulent calls. This technology is capable of blocking fake calls at the operator level itself.
