A recall of 3 million units of the company's cars, mostly because of the vehicles' door handles, has been issued by Tesla and other Chinese car companies. The American car manufacturer is recalling almost 3 million cars, which have been manufactured and sold in China. The recalled vehicles include the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S due to safety problems regarding Tesla's door handles.
As per media reports, this is the biggest recall of the year. It comes only a few months after the Chinese government declared in February that they will start banning hidden car door handles that are usually installed in Tesla electric vehicles as well as Chinese EVs starting next year.
China has been keeping an eye on hidden door handles, flush door handles, or car door handles following accident cases involving electric vehicles in China and around the world where hidden doors did not work, leaving people trapped inside them.
A notice on the Chinese regulator's website cites safety risks. The notice states that in a serious situation, such as a collision, where the electrical system malfunctions, the car handles could prevent the driver from opening the doors quickly enough to exit or prevent people outside the car from getting in. Cui Dongshu, head of the China Passenger Car Association, called the recall a necessary step for the development of the EV industry.
According to media reports, the notice further states that Tesla will update the software on the vehicles to mitigate the risks. Beijing-based Chinese company Xiaomi is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles. Hangzhou-based Leapmotor is recalling more than 370,000 cars. The reasons given in each case were similar, mostly related to problems with their car's door handles.
