Wednesday’s statement from the Central Government informed the Supreme Court that it will give a final solution on August 7 regarding whether to award the President's Gallantry Award to a former police officer who shot dead two dacoits in an operation in 2003.

As per the orders given on July 20, the Supreme Court has expressed its dissatisfaction over the Central Government for not complying with the decision of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which awarded the prize to former police officer Vivek Singh Chauhan.

In 2003, Chauhan was the SHO of Ghatigaon police station of Gwalior district. During an operation against the dacoits in a village, two dacoits were killed while Chauhan sustained injuries.The 

Supreme Court gave the Centre an ultimatum until July 29 for compliance with the decision of the High Court in response to a petition filed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan.

The matter came up for hearing on Wednesday before a bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and R. Mahadevan.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central Government, requested the bench to list the matter for August 7. He said, "I am working on it, and a solution will be found."

The lawyer representing Chauhan informed the bench that gallantry awards are announced and presented every year on August 14-15.

Therefore, the matter should not be postponed beyond August 7. The bench noted that it had made it clear in its July 20 order that no further extension would be granted.

The bench said, "Today the Solicitor General requested that the matter be adjourned until August 7 and that he would come up with a positive solution to the issue by that date." The matter was subsequently listed for August 7.
