Why Teams Are Looking Beyond Traditional BI Pricing?
Licence costs for tools like Tableau, Power BI and QuickSight rise with every new user. Features such as embedding, advanced security or AI often sit in higher tiers. Over time the bill grows faster than the value. At the same time, older reporting tools like Crystal Reports, Jasper Reports and SSRS start to feel limited when business users expect self-service dashboards and the AI powered ability to ask questions in plain English.
Helical Insight was built to solve both problems. It is fully open source, the complete product is free, and it runs wherever you want — on-premises, private cloud, public cloud, Docker or Kubernetes.
Automated Migration Makes the Switch Practical
Moving from an existing BI or reporting platform is rarely simple. Helical Insight team provides, on request, an automated migration utility that works with Crystal Reports, Jasper Reports, SSRS, Tableau, Power BI and similar tools. Existing reports and dashboards can be brought across with far less manual effort than a complete rebuild. This reduces both the time and the risk involved in modernising an analytics environment.
Four Clear Situations Where Helical Insight Fits
1. Companies moving from legacy reporting tools
Organisations still outdated legacy tools like Crystal Reports, SSRS, Jasper Reports, Pentaho reports, BIRT etc often need more modern capabilities without throwing away years of report logic. The automated migration utility lets them keep what works while adding dashboards and AI on the same platform.
2. Companies switching for cost reasons
Teams that have outgrown the pricing model of commercial BI tools can move to Helical Insight and stop paying per-user licences. All features remain available, so there is no trade-off between cost and capability. Most of the enterprise software (like PowerBI, Tableau etc) or the open source tools (like Metabase, Superset etc) have very costly per user license.
3. New projects starting from scratch
Start-ups and teams building their first analytics stack can adopt a full-featured platform from day one. They avoid the common pattern of beginning on a limited free version and later discovering that the features they need require a paid upgrade.
4. Organisations that need everything on-premises, including AI
Some companies cannot send data outside their own servers. Helical Insight installs fully on-premises, and its AI module supports a bring-your-own-LLM approach. You can connect a commercial model or run a self-hosted one. This is especially useful for regulated sectors such as healthcare, banking, defence and telecom, where data residency and control are non-negotiable.
One Platform for Three Types of Analytics
Helical Insight covers traditional pixel-perfect reporting, self-service dashboards and conversational AI in a single product. Finance teams can still produce formatted statements and regulatory filings. Business users can explore data on their own. Executives can ask questions in plain language and receive answers from the data. The AI layer works with any large language model you choose, including models you host yourself, so sensitive data never has to leave your environment.

Getting Started Is Straightforward
Download the Community Edition, connect your existing databases or data warehouses, and start building. Many teams have their first dashboards and reports running within a day. When you need formal support or help with a larger rollout, the Enterprise Edition is available. The product itself does not change — only the level of service.
Helical Insight removes the usual compromises between cost, features and control. For teams that want enterprise-grade business intelligence without the enterprise price tag, it is worth a serious look.
