New Zealand continues with its series of problems in the five-match ODI series against India. The star batter of New Zealand, Devon Conway, has been dropped from the ODI series against India because of a concussion. Conway and Matt Henry had an unfortunate collision in the field practice one day prior to the game, and he could not play the first ODI of the series that was played in Auckland. He cannot play in the rest of the series as well. However, Matt Henry is fine now and is available for selection for the upcoming ODI that is scheduled for Saturday in Wellington. Nick Kelly, who has scored more than 10,000 runs in domestic cricket, has been selected for the rest of the games instead of Devon Conway. But, he is yet to prove himself in One Day International cricket.
Nick Kelly was initially selected only for the fourth and fifth ODIs. He has now joined the New Zealand team in Wellington. Kelly has been removed from the New Zealand A squad, which begins the third match of their unofficial Test series against India A in Lincoln on Saturday, and Auckland batsman Dale Phillips has been included in his place.
Nick Kelly made his One Day International debut for New Zealand in Napier last year. He has scored only 265 runs in eight ODIs so far. However, his domestic performance has been impressive. He has scored 5,051 runs in 138 innings in 77 first-class matches, 3,538 runs in 115 innings in 120 List A matches, and 2,167 runs in 99 innings in 109 T20Is, taking his total to over 10,000 runs in domestic cricket.
There have been two more changes to the New Zealand A squad, with fast bowlers Simon Keane (hamstring), Ben Lister (side), and Fraser Sheat (side) ruled out due to injury. New Zealand Cricket released a statement stating that Keane and Sheat had sustained injuries earlier in the series and would return to play for their domestic teams within the next three to four weeks.
Lister is working on a return-to-play program for a right side strain sustained during training with Auckland. Keane and Shiett (both taking six wickets) are the leading wicket-takers in the series so far, along with Zak Gibson and India A's Aaqib Nabi. Gibson and Brett Randall will now remain with the New Zealand A team for the third unofficial Test, and will be joined by Danru Ferns.
