FC Andorra goalie Jesus Ovono has spoken for the first time since an incident that saw one of his teammates die on the football pitch in Spain. This is after forward Jesus de Miguel passed away after colliding with him in Spain. Following the incident, Ovono has received a lot of criticism on social media and even labeled a murderer which forced him to close down his Instagram page. Ovono has since stated that this is the hardest period of his life and has decided to concentrate on the bereaved family.
The incident happened on Monday when Tenerife played against FC Andorra in the second division of Spain. Both teams were leading with a score of 2-2 in the last moments of the game.
De Miguel was then rushed to the hospital after suffering cardiac arrest following the collision. He was taken to the ICU, but died the next day at the age of 30 years. The football fraternity in Spain is mourning the loss of de Miguel. Ovono was also sent off the field with a red card following the collision.
In a statement released by FC Andorra on Wednesday, 25-year-old Ovono expressed his grief over the incident. The Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper said he was at a loss for words. He said, "These are the most difficult days of my life. I don't know what to say, and it's very difficult for me to accept what has happened. I am deeply saddened by the loss of Jesus." My thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him. Right now, I can't think of anything else. My thoughts are only on Jesus and this grief. May his soul rest in peace.
Ovono was targeted on social media after the incident. Amid the online abuse, he deactivated his Instagram account. Meanwhile, his teammate, Lautaro Spatz, defended him. He said that Ovono was deeply affected by the incident and would never intentionally hurt anyone.
Spazz wrote, "Those who know him know what kind of person he is and how much pain he is going through right now. He would never intentionally hurt anyone. Unfortunate events can happen in football, but no one could imagine that his life would end in such a tragic way."
The Spanish National Police are investigating the case. Authorities are treating it as a possible case of culpable homicide. However, such investigations are part of the normal procedure in cases of unnatural deaths in Spain. FC Andorra has also arranged psychological support for club members affected by the incident.
