A para-swimmer, one of the members of the Indian team for Asian Games, has been accused of molesting a hotel employee. In connection with this charge, para-swimmer, Mohammad Shams Alam-Sheikh, was not allowed to participate in the Asian Games, but was deported to India. Sources have revealed that after the complaint by a female hotel employee, the police in Japan took Shams with them and compelled him to make an apology and asked him to get out of the hotel. According to sources, the para-swimmer then checked in at another hotel at his own cost. Shams was deported to India by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) late on Tuesday night. Shams had to take part in the 100-meter breaststroke event on Wednesday.
Indian team is staying at a local hotel called No. 24 Sheraton in Nagoya. According to sources, the incident happened on Monday. It has been claimed that Shams asked a female hotel employee to come to his room under the guise of ordering a towel and molested her. After that, Shams went to the swimming stadium. The female employee reported the incident to hotel officials, who then informed the police. Police, accompanied by Indian team officials, arrived at the stadium to question Shams. Shams initially denied the incident, prompting them to file an FIR. When Indian officials warned Shams he could face jail time, he confessed. Sources indicate that after the confession, the police took the para-swimmer with them. Upon Indian officials' intervention, he was forced to sign an apology, which could have escalated further.
Sources indicate that the organizers removed Shams' name from the list of swimmers participating in the Para Asiad. The Asian Para Swimming Federation has also taken this incident seriously. Indian team's Chef de Mission, Rahul Swami, stated that upon his arrival in India, action, including banning him from participating in Para swimming, could be taken against him. Rahul confirmed that Shams has been sent back.
This is not the first case of molestation of a female hotel employee. During the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, a massage therapist from the Indian team was accused of molesting a hotel employee. Action was also taken against him.
