Delhi Capitals have turned to a familiar face to guide their spinners. Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has been appointed spin-bowling coach ahead of the 2027 IPL season, marking his first coaching role in the league. For Mishra, it is a return to the franchise where his IPL journey began in 2008.
‘Dilli Is My Heartbeat’
In a video shared on the franchise’s social media handles, Mishra said, “I don’t know about legends, but I did really decent in IPL. Dilli dilwallon ki hai (Delhi is of the people with a large heart). When the first season of IPL was held, I was a part of DC. Today, when I am starting my coaching career, it’s also with the DC team, and so, I am very happy.”
He added, “A tiger is the one who never leaves his prey. Dilli is my heartbeat. We will try to give the happiness to the Dilli fans, which they have been waiting for these many years.”
The IPL’s Hat-Trick King
Mishra’s IPL story began in style. In his very first match in 2008, he took a five-wicket haul that included the first of his three IPL hat-tricks. He added more in 2011 and 2013, and no bowler has taken more hat-tricks in the league’s history.
Known for slow, flighted leg-breaks, he played every IPL season from 2008 to 2024, except 2022, turning out for Delhi, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants. He finished with 174 wickets from 162 matches at an economy rate of 7.37. For India, he played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is between 2003 and 2017, before retiring from all cricket in September 2025.
Why His Arrival Matters Now
Delhi Capitals’ spin department is in transition. The franchise traded wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to Lucknow Super Giants, bringing back Rishabh Pant in return, and has added leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari. Mishra, a classic leg-spinner himself, is well placed to help young wrist-spinners like Ansari develop the control and variations needed in T20 cricket.
A Complete Support Staff Overhaul
Mishra joins a heavily revamped coaching team led by former India captain Sourav Ganguly as head coach. Fast bowling coach Chaminda Vaas and assistant-cum-batting coach Yuvraj Singh were also present with Mishra at the franchise’s camp-cum-trials in Aerocity in September.
The changes come from an arrangement between DC’s co-owners, GMR Sports and JSW Sports, under which each runs the franchise’s cricket operations in alternating two-year cycles.
DC have also been busy in the trade window, sending left-arm pacer T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The Title Hunt Continues
Delhi Capitals finished sixth in 2026 and are still chasing their first IPL title. With a new coaching group and a reshaped squad, the franchise is clearly betting on fresh ideas and local connection.
What Comes Next
All eyes will now be on the auction and how Mishra and Ganguly shape DC’s bowling plans ahead of IPL 2027.
