The Supreme Court declined to examine a decision which held that any member of a Scheduled Caste, who converted to any religion apart from Hinduism, Sikhism, or Buddhism, would be considered a non-Scheduled Caste member from the day he converted.

According to Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan Singh, there were no mistakes made in the decision rendered on March 24, 2026, that needed rectification.

In its order dated July 15, the Supreme Court stated, "The petition seeking an oral hearing on the review petition is dismissed."

We have seen the review petition. We have also read the March 24, 2026, decision on which the review is sought. We find no error in the decision.

In a landmark judgement on March 24, the Supreme Court had earlier said that if a person belonging to a Scheduled Caste converts to a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism, or Buddhism, then his SC status is lost on conversion, irrespective of the caste in which he was born.

It upheld the Andhra Pradesh High Court's order that a person belonging to a Scheduled Caste loses their SC status "immediately and completely" upon converting to Christianity.

Any person who follows a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism, or Buddhism will not be considered a member of a Scheduled Caste.
