Pakistan is going through a difficult time in its cricket team. Following their loss to Bangladesh in the first Test match, Pakistan also lost their WTC points due to the over-rate. Before the second Test in Sylhet, a major issue has come up regarding Shaheen Afridi and the Pakistani Test skipper Shan Masood. It is being reported that both veterans had an argument in the dressing room. Consequently, Shaheen will not be in Pakistan’s playing XI for the upcoming second Test match.
According to Telecom Asia Sport, the atmosphere in the dressing room was already charged following the Mirpur defeat. In the first Test match, Pakistan needed 268 runs in their fourth innings, but they managed only 163 runs. This came after they were 119/3 at one stage. This was their third consecutive Test defeat against Bangladesh.
The report states that after the defeat, Shan Masood openly questioned the performance of Pakistan's fast bowlers, particularly Shaheen Afridi, who averaged only 132 kph. Shan was unhappy with the lack of intensity in his pace attack and reportedly told him in the dressing room that they failed to create pressure due to a lack of speed, which was a matter of concern.
According to the report, Shaheen responded angrily to Shan Masood's comments and blamed Pakistan's batting unit, which once again failed under pressure. Shaheen told the captain to focus on his performance with the bat first. The report states that Shaheen blamed poor batting for the failure to build a lead in the first innings. Meanwhile, Shan had a particularly poor personal test, scoring just 9 and 2 runs in both innings.
Pakistan's biggest defeat came in the first innings. They were 349/5 and were heading for a big lead, but lost their last five wickets for just 19 runs. Mohammad Rizwan's dismissal became a major topic of discussion in the dressing room. The wicketkeeper-batsman was batting on 59 when he played an unnecessary attacking shot and was dismissed at a crucial moment. It is reported that the coaching staff later had a serious conversation with him. The coaching staff did not reprimand the senior player, but instead urged him to understand his responsibility.
There was also talk of dropping Rizwan for the second Test and giving a chance to newcomer Ghazi Ghori, however, the management has decided not to do so. Whereas Shaheen Afridi has been dropped from the playing eleven for the second Test against Bangladesh.
