There was a huge accident due to leakage of ammonia gas in a privately owned fishery industry in the district of Tiruvallur (near Periyapalayam). The casualty has gone up to nine people as one more employee succumbed to the leakage at the site yesterday morning as per the reports from the Health Department.
The leakage took place last night on 21st June in the factory situated in the Kannigaiper-Manjankaranai region. Several workers who were present in shifts faced the leakage.
According to reports, a total of 80 people were exposed to the gas. Two people died on the night of the incident (June 21). The death toll rose to six by Monday evening, and with three more workers succumbing on Tuesday morning, the total number of fatalities has reached nine.
According to the administration, two of the affected workers have fully recovered and returned home, while 69 others are still receiving treatment at various hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur (such as Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Stanley Medical College, Vels Hospital, and Venkateswara Hospital). Some of them are in critical condition and are under close medical supervision.
Most of the deceased were female migrant workers. According to the administration, seven of the nine victims were from Odisha, and two were from Assam. Meanwhile, doctors state that the workers are experiencing severe breathing difficulties due to the inhalation of ammonia gas. Additionally, symptoms such as intense burning in the eyes and throat, persistent coughing, and shortness of breath are being observed.
