A big decision has been made by the Central Government in favor of smartphone users. This decision was made keeping in view the safety of smartphones and the benefits of the consumers.
Under this decision, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has placed the screen protectors of smartphones in the ambit of the Bureau of Indian Standards. This will result in curbing the sale of substandard screen protectors and will help in promoting Indian manufacturing industries.
Smartphone screen protectors have been added to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods Order 2021 under a government notification issued on September 21. Screen guards become the 66th product under this order. In addition to it, there have been other products like smartphones, laptops, chargers, LED TVs, and printers that have already been covered under BIS norms.
This regulation will become mandatory from April 1, 2027. This deadline is intended to give manufacturers and importers sufficient time to adapt to quality standards.
Currently, buyers can purchase screen guards as before, but once the rule is implemented, buyers will no longer have to guess whether a guard is reliable.
Manufacturers will now have to ensure that the glass can withstand shock and impact when the phone is dropped. They will also need to ensure that the glass pieces, if broken, do not shatter and injure the user, but instead stick together.
Features such as fingerprint-resistant coating, anti-glare finish, and blue-light filtering will be regulated. Clearly printed packaging will require the brand name, batch number, date of manufacture, the correct glass thickness, and the BIS mark.
Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the industry body ICEA, stated that BIS certification will prevent substandard foreign and local products, providing a level playing field for domestic manufacturers and global companies.
