The team is yet to decide whether they will take part in the championships despite having just 12 days before the start of World Weightlifting Championships. It will be the maiden participation of Mirabai Chanu in the newly introduced 53 kg class weight after winning the silver medal at Asian Games. The team comprises eight members, who have yet to be issued visas to China or even approved by SAI. The championship which is to be held in Ningbo from October 24 to November 8 is the first qualifier for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics.
As per the report, Indian Weightlifting Federation has nominated Mirabai Chanu, Gyaneshwari (53), Nirupama, Usha (61), Harjinder (69), M Raja, Charu Pesi (65), and Lovepreet (110 kg) for this championship. Sources indicate that SAI has reservations about the team selection based on the performance of lifters other than Mira at the Asian Games, particularly the selection of multiple lifters in a single weight category.
The association states that according to the Olympic qualification system, multiple lifters can compete in a single weight category. This time, the Olympics will be held based on rankings, not weight categories, but lifters competing in qualifying tournaments.
Being held immediately after the Asian Games, Mira has not had time to prepare for her new weight category. Mira, who won silver in the 48 kg category at the last championships by lifting 199 kg, is preparing to compete at her normal weight of 50 kg. He does not have high expectations from this championship, but he is preparing to play here for Olympic qualification.
